Alvin Ailey's legacy as one of the world's premier choreographers endures through this performance of three signature works: "For Bird with Love," "Memoria" and "Witness." Gary DeLoatch dances the title role in the first piece, a Charlie Parker tribute; April Berry appears in the second piece, Ailey's love letter to friend Joyce Tisler; and Marilyn Banks dances the third number, a solo piece. Artistic director Judith Jamison introduces the works.
Come See The Paradise is a deeply touching love story set against the backdrop of a dramatic and controversial period in American history, It follows the romance and eventual marriage of Jack McGurn (Dennis Quad), a hot blooded Irish American, and a beautiful Japanese American Lily Dawanura (Tamlyn Tomita), at the outset of World War II.
The first segment features an animated mummy stalking selected student victims; the second tale tells the story of a "cat from hell" who cannot be killed and leaves a trail of victims behind it; the third story is about a man who witnesses a bizarre killing and promises never to tell what he saw and the "in-between" bit is the story of a woman preparing to cook her newspaper boy for supper.
