Agnese Visconti loves Scandiano but is compelled to marry Duke Gonzaga during Scandiano's absence at war. When the lovers meet after his return, Count Nerli betrays them and secures Scandiano's death sentence. Scandiano is rescued by his soldiers, but arrives too late to save Agnese, who stabbed herself to death while resisting Nerli's assault.
