One of the most noteworthy early films of the supernatural, and the first known kaibyo ("ghost-cat") film, This film was based upon Hana Saga Nekomata Zoshi ("Legend of the Cat-Demon of Saga") a kabuki play written in 1853 by Joko Segawa III in which a cat becomes possessed by drinking a suicide's blood and carries out the corpses's vengeance from beyond the grave.

The West Texas Borax Company is practically insolvent. John Graham, the president, has been unable to find the white mineral in sufficient quantities to satisfy the eastern stockholders, and a letter from his partner arrives which brings the disagreeable news that their backers are about to back out, unless, in the language of Missouri, they "are shown" something.
The film pictures scenes on a big ostrich farm in Southern California, near Los Angeles. A large flock of several hundred of the big birds are seen feeding.
A printer, drinking excessively and neglectful of his family obligations, is fired from his job when he offends his wealthy employer and his employer’s guests as they tour the printworks.
Two Johns, a Confederate and an Union soldier, leave their families to go to the front. After a skirmish they end up separated from their respective sides, the Union soldier shoots the Confederate, but he has to escape and look for refuge in the house of his enemy.
