A young man finds himself at loggerheads with his friend after he has tried to kiss his wife and at the same time turns out to be a common thief. When they meet again several years later, the villain has become a member of the crime gang called The Black Domino. By a nefarious trick, the villain gains access to his old friends’ villa and pretends to reconcile with them, while his hooded, cloaked and masked cronies prepare to kidnap the man as soon as he steps out the door. Grace Wallace was the only child of a widow of decidedly meager means. Mr. Rupert Howland, a widower of considerable wealth, the father of a girl child, and an old friend of the family, often surreptitiously helped them.
The West Texas Borax Company is practically insolvent. John Graham, the president, has been unable to find the white mineral in sufficient quantities to satisfy the eastern stockholders, and a letter from his partner arrives which brings the disagreeable news that their backers are about to back out, unless, in the language of Missouri, they "are shown" something.
Four gentlemen are talking in a beer-garden; during a short absence of one of them, who pretends to be an art lover, the others decide to make a prank on him.
