Following his victory at Breitenfeld, King Gustaf Adolf captures Würzburg Castle, surviving a series of assassination plots orchestrated by Catholic monks. The pious Regina von Emmeritz is chosen to kill the "heretical king" but is instead disarmed by his profound nobility and goodness. Ultimately, Regina sacrifices herself by drinking the poison intended to assassinate the hero-king.
