The narrative follows a man who, after being released from prison on a parole document known as a "ticket of leave", struggles to reform his life. He faces social discrimination as an ex-convict and is constantly harassed by former criminal associates who attempt to coerce him into participating in a bank robbery. He must fight to clear his name, evade his former gang, and prove his intent to live a reformed, honorable life
