Tân, a Vietnamese student in Paris, has tuberculosis. He is hospitalized in a university sanatorium in the Parisian suburbs. Far from his family, who can no longer support him because of the First Indochina War, he continues to work nightshifts as a musician in restaurants and cabarets. His Vietnamese friends don't realize that he lives in abject poverty, in a world apart.
