Basilio, a gritty welterweight champ, moved up to challenge Robinson, then 36 and a four-time middleweight king. The upset fueled demand for a rematch, with Robinson as the underdog—a rare role for the aging legend. Basilio, still in his prime, aimed to cement his legacy, while Robinson sought redemption.
