When Fotini is captured by the bandit Captain Arvanitis, Liakos frees her. His pride makes him refuse the reward offered by Notaras. Notaras, equally proud, sends one of his subordinates to ask for Liakos' sister's hand in marriage. She commits suicide and Liakos swears revenge.
