May 13, 1981, afternoon. A general audience with the head of the Church is taking place in St. Mark's Square in Rome. Suddenly, the joyful buzz rising above the crowd of pilgrims is interrupted by the crack of gunshots. John Paul II, his face contorted with pain, slumps into the seat of the popemobile.
