In april 1941 lag opeens in de kiosken en tijdschriftenwinkels een klein boekje, een boekje met een compleet stripverhaal. Een verhaal met een echte held, met een van weinig woorden, goed in het pak, recht door zee, ijzersterk en watervlug: judoka-detective Dick Bos! De zwart-wit boekjes werden na de eerste publicatie door honderdduizenden ademloos gelezen. De documentaire gaat op zoek naar het succes van de boekjes en naar de bedenker van de stripheld. Alfred Mazure (1925 – 1974) vereeuwigde de avonturen van zijn stripheld niet alleen in de Dick Bos boekjes maar ook in drie live-action en twee animatiefilms. Ook gaat de documentaire over de echte Dick-Bos fans, waaronder filmer Paul Verhoeven, die de reeks van 73 Dick Bos boekjes compleet bezit. Bij sommige scènes van zijn beroemde films zoals Soldaat van Oranje en Basic Instinct liet Paul Verhoeven zich inspireren door passages uit de boeken van Dick Bos.
