Ve filmu se Němcová vrací do svého dětství (druhá linie) a odhaluje divákovi skutečnou pravdu. Na Staré Bělidlo přijíždí po 20. letech babička. Není to ale Marie Novotná, nýbrž její soused Mareš. Díky své povaze si postupně získává přízeň rodiny Proškovic i samotné kněžny Zaháňské. Vydavateli se však tento příběh podaný B.Němcovou nelíbí a provádí nekompromisní korekci celého díla. Nakonec přepíše celou knihu sám. Proto se originální rukopis do dnešních dnů nedochoval. Situace ještě graduje příjezdem opravdové babičky a dochází k nečekanému odhalení.
