As soon as the woman rejoined her people (for she knew where they had fled), and after telling them how admirable the adornment and generosity of our men were, they all rushed to the beach and believed them to be people sent from heaven. Swimming ashore, they brought gold, of which they had some abundance, and exchanged it for a piece of earthenware or a glass cup. If our men gave them a small bell, a jingle bell, a piece of mirror, or something else, they would accept it as payment.”
