"Starvation, Cannibalism, and Endurance at Jamestown"01 May 201344 mins
Established in 1607, Jamestown was the first permanent English colony in North America. In 1994, Preservation Virginia began an archaeological project called Jamestown Rediscovery to find the remains of the original James Fort of 1607-1624. Twenty years of excavation have established the location of the fort and principal buildings, and recovered more than 1.5 million artifacts. In late July of 2012 archaeologists working in the fort came across a startling discovery. Buried in a 400-year-old cellar were the partial skeletal remains of a young English woman. Careful forensic analysis of her bones revealed that she had been cannibalized. While we may never know her true identity we have named the young woman Jane. Follow the archaeologists and the forensic scientists as they unravel her story.
