Ascending is a sculptural response to the ancient working quarry of Kanagaso in the Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan made by British artist Julie Brook in Autumn 2019. The quarry has National Heritage status for its beautiful yellow ochre Tufa stone. In response to the 150m cliff, hand carved through several generations towering above the quarry, Brook creates an eyeline of 58 steps built from and through the spoil heaps of the discarded blocks of stone.
