Engaging in conversations with his own memories, a photographer who documented patients at the facility, as well as his son, Vino Carvalho seeks to reconstruct the social imaginary that once enveloped – and still surrounds – the Bom Retiro Psychiatric Hospital. What does the history of this place reveal about society’s perception and management of mental illness?
