Gabrielle Provaas graduated in 1996 at the University of Amsterdam in Film and Television Studies, with minors in Art History and Psychology. Shortly afterwards she started working as a journalist for Dutch broadcaster VPRO. Since 2002 she has worked as a freelance journalist for various newspapers and magazines. As a director and commissioning editor she worked on various TV shows and made short documentaries.

While still living in Amsterdam under his birth name 'Ian Kerkhof,' Aryan Kaganof co-penned the script for his friends Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth's debut feature Venus in Furs (1995), which is undoubtedly the most faithful cinematic adaptation of the S&M-themed Leopold von Sacher-Masoch novella of the same name.
