1972-ben végzett a Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskolán, rendező-operatőr szakon. 1980–1982 között a nyíregyházi Móricz Zsigmond Színház művészeti vezetője volt. Több filmben szereplőként is megjelent (Jancsó Miklós: Szörnyek évadja, Kék Duna keringő, Nekem lámpást adott a kezembe az Úr Pesten, Maár Gyula: Felhőjáték, Makk Károly: Játszani kell, Bereményi Géza: A tanítványok, Makk Károly: A szerelem stb.). A magyar filmélet kiemelkedő személyisége. Öt alkotásával nyert díjat a veszprémi tv-fesztiválon: a Shakespeare: III. Richárd 1975-ben, a Volpone 1976-ban, a Barrabás 1979-ban, a Nők iskolája 1985-ben lett fődíjas, míg Bosszú című filmjével 1978-ban a legjobb rendezésért járó díjat érdemelte ki. Az ő nevéhez fűződik József Attila verseinek, életútjának televíziós feldolgozása: a József Attila-versek 1981-ben, a József Attiláról kortársai című, tizenkilenc részes dokumentumfilm 1981–1983 között, Légy ostoba - József Attila-est Hoboval, míg József Attila: Szabad ötletek jegyzéke két ülésben című alkotása Jordán Tamással1992-ben készült.Első nagyjátékfilmje, a Szürkület (1990) különdíjat kapott a XXII. Magyar Filmszemlén, illetve különböző elismeréseket érdemelt ki nemzetközi fesztiválokon, így Locarnóban és Strasbourgban. 1998-ban készült Szenvedély című játékfilmje a XXIX. Magyar Filmszemlén elnyerte a játék-, kísérleti és kisjátékfilmes zsűri fődíját, a legjobb rendező díját, a legjobb női és férfi színésznek járó elismerést, az operatőri díjat és a külföldi kritikusok Gene Moskowitz-díját, illetve több nemzetközi fesztivál díját is magáénak tudhatja.
