Avocat d’affaires de profession, il occupe successivement les fonctions de maire de Neuilly-sur-Seine, de député, de porte-parole du gouvernement, de ministre du Budget, de ministre de la Communication, de ministre de l’Intérieur, de ministre de l’Économie et des Finances et de président du conseil général des Hauts-de-Seine.
Alors qu’il est président de l’UMP, Nicolas Sarkozy remporte l’élection présidentielle de 2007 avec 53,06 % des voix au second tour, face à la candidate socialiste Ségolène Royal. Il prend ses fonctions de 23eprésident de la République française le 16 mai 2007. Son mandat est principalement marqué par le début des répercussions en France de la « Grande Récession » puis de la crise de la dette dans la zone euro. Candidat à l’élection présidentielle de 2012 pour un second mandat à la tête de l’État, il rassemble 48,36 % des suffrages au second tour, et François Hollande lui succède le 15 mai 2012.
Depuis son départ de la présidence, il est membre de droit du Conseil constitutionnel.
