A mysterious figure (the Ukuku) is rejected by the villagers. One morning, the Ukuku sees Manuel (a 7-year-old boy), approaches him, and Manuel is frightened. Eventually, he agrees to play with him, and from then on, they form a great friendship. Manuel asks the Ukuku for help bringing water to the village, as they are suffering from a drought and the animals are dying. Thus begins the Ukuku's journey, during which he experiences several setbacks in his search for water, all while being observed through coca leaves by Paqo Paqureq (the village's wise elder). Finally, the Ukuku climbs a snow-capped mountain, but in a moment of carelessness, he slips and falls to his death. Manuel feels the presence of the Ukuku's spirit, and suddenly it begins to rain. He thanks his friend the Ukuku for all the sacrifices he made to get water for the village.
