Yönetmen, senarist, yapımcı ve oyuncudur.Avusturya Lisesi'nden mezun oldu.
İstanbul Üniversitesi'nde Hukuk eğitimi aldı. Yaşamı boyunca 100'ün üzerinde senaryo yazıp, film yönetti. Yönetmenliğini yaptığı filmlerde küçük rollerde yer aldı. Lütfi Akad'la senaryo çalışmaları yaptı. Birçok filmini çektiği Seden Film Şirketi'ni kurdu.
1951 yılında Kani Kıpçak`ın yönettiği "İstanbul Kan Ağlarken" adlı filmin yazarak sinemaya girdi. 1956`da ilk filmi Kanlarıyla Ödediler'i çekti. 1959`da çektiği "Düşman Yolları Kesti" adlı filmle Türk sinemasının önemli yönetmenleri arasına girdi. Bazı önemli filmleri Düşman Yolları Kesti (1959), Namus Uğruna (1960) ve Çalıkuşu'dur (1966). Genellikle duygusal filmler çekmesine rağmen ilk dönemlerinde Feridun Karakaya'nın unutulmaz tiplemesi Cilali İbo serisi gibi filmleri de yönettti. Sinema filmlerinin dışında son dönemlerde pek çok TV dizisinin yönetmenliğini yaptı.
Sanat yaşamı boyunca pek çok ödül kazanan yönetmene, Kültür Bakanlığı tarafından 1991 yılında Devlet Sanatçısı unvanı verildi. Prostat kanserinden dolayı 74 yaşında vefat etti. Aynı zamanda kendisi Adana Ceyhan kaymakamlığı yapmış olan Şeyh Ahmet Hamdi Efendinin torunudur.
